Spiritual Meaning of the Block Party on September 23

Sermon: The Spiritual Meaning of the Block Party on September 23:

Matthew 14:19-21

19 Then He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass. And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitudes.

20 So they all ate and were filled, and they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments that remained.

21 Now those who had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Mark 2:1-5

A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home.

2 So many gathered that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them.

3 Some men came, bringing to him a paralytic, carried by four of them.

4 Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus and, after digging through it, lowered the mat the paralyzed man was lying on.

5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven."

As you may already know, on September 23, we will have a block party at the Drum Castle apartment area.   This is not a worldly party.  It is a spiritual party.  I would like to compare this party with Jesus’ ministry over 2000 years ago. Wherever Jesus went, a crowd followed him because he taught and preached the Gospel.  Jesus and his disciples fed and healed many people.  Jesus also performed several miracles.  That is why a lot of Jewish people followed him.  Matthew 14 says that He commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass.  He asked his disciples to feed them.  The disciples replied to Jesus that there was not enough food for the people.  It would have taken 200 denarius to feed this multitude.  One denarius means one days’ wage and it was lot of money for the disciples.  Jesus asked his disciples if you have anything else.  The disciples replied that there are five loaves and two fishes which belong to a little boy.  Jesus took the five loaves and two fishes and looked up to the heavens to bless the food.  Then Jesus broke the five loaves of bread and gave them to his disciples.  They gave it to the multitudes of people.  Those who ate and were filled and yet there were 12 baskets still remaining. Jesus fed 5000 men beside many children and women.

If you are in Christ, you can enjoy the fullness of His spirit.  He provides you with all that you need in life.

Mark 2 says that Jesus came back to Capernaum where Peter was living.  Peter was an outstanding disciple and an excellent leader in His ministry.  When people heard that Jesus is coming to this town, many people stood line and filled the inside and outside of the houses to see him.  There was one time when four friends carried a paralytic man with mat to meet Jesus.  They could not enter the house that Jesus was in because the house was so crowded.  The four friends eventually took their friend to the roof of the house and after digging through it, lowered him into the room to see Jesus.  Finally they were beside Jesus. At that moment, Jesus told them, son your sins are forgiven because of his friends’ faith.

Let’s think about the paralytic: he is not only physically paralyzed, but also spiritually paralyzed.  If you come to Jesus, he will heal you in both ways.

As I told you several times, my sickness is healed when I met Jesus. Not only physically, but also spiritually.

As you know, there are many volunteers who work together to make this block party a success; we will prepare Nepali and American foods as well as drinks.  We will prepare medical doctors to perform medical and dental screening. We will prepare the presentation of the Gospel for adults and children. We will prepare the Nepali Bibles, Spanish and English Bible as well as their tracks.

Jesus fed people, healed the sick, and preached the Gospel.  This block party is same model of Jesus ministries.

1. You and I are already believers

2. I will participate in this block party as one of four friends who tried to help the paralytic.

3. By doing that, I may lead my brothers and sister to Jesus Christ and they may heal from sickness and live an abundant life in Christ.

4. You and I learn how to serve others.

5. I will bring my family and friends to this block party.

6. This is not worldly party and it is spiritual party to glorify God and Jesus our Lord.
